TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY (TBS)

The letters of First and Second Corinthians are well worth our reading. The port city of Corinth was strategically located between the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas providing for a bustling economy that placed heavy emphasis on materialism. The inhabitants were largely Greeks and Romans who brought with them a mix of gods lending to a pluralistic culture. On the mountain looking down on Corinth was an enormous temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite promoting a heightened sensuality unique to the region. Athletes were worshipped and coliseums were filled. Idolatrous feasts and gluttony were commonplace. Sound familiar? It is within this context Paul writes his two letters to the Corinthians forming a Christian spirituality that transformed the culture. Both letters have memorable verses, phrases, images and metaphors. Both are worth our reading. More importantly, both are worth our listening for the Word that can transform us today.

Classes will resume Tuesday mornings, January 5th thru March 30th from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Graves Hall with a lecture by the Rev. Robert T. Jennings followed by small-group spiritual formation.   There is a $20 fee to cover current study books, pastoral care needs, and related materials.  To sign up contact Kathy Foster at 897-7789 or kathydfoster@insightbb.com, or call Cheryl Brandreth in the parish office, or at cherylb@stfrancisinthefields.org.
